Home Dialysis
Overview
Home dialysis offers individuals with chronic kidney disease the convenience and flexibility of managing their treatment in the comfort of their own homes. There are two main types of home dialysis: peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home haemodialysis (HHD). PD involves using the lining of the abdomen to filter waste, while HHD uses a machine to filter blood similarly to in-centre dialysis but in a home setting. Home dialysis empowers patients with more control over their schedules, allowing for better integration of treatment into their daily lives.

Our VISION
What are the benefits of home dialysis?
Home dialysis provides several advantages, including greater flexibility in treatment schedules, increased independence, and improved quality of life. Patients can tailor their dialysis sessions to fit their lifestyle, allowing them to maintain work, school, or social commitments. Home dialysis also reduces the need for frequent hospital visits, minimising exposure to infections and offering a more comfortable, familiar environment. Additionally, research suggests that more frequent dialysis sessions can lead to better health outcomes, such as improved blood pressure control and enhanced overall well-being.
Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis
Sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) is a combination of sporadic haemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy. It is performed using conventional haemodialysis technology over a long period. This form of therapy enables the slow removal of fluid, particularly for those with acute kidney injuries, which cause an immediate decrease in kidney function due to dysregulation and an imbalance of fluid.
How do you prepare for home dialysis?
Preparing for home dialysis involves several key steps. Firstly, patients receive thorough training on how to operate the dialysis equipment safely and effectively. This training ensures they feel confident and capable of performing the procedures independently. Additionally, patients need to prepare a clean, dedicated space at home for the dialysis equipment and supplies. Creating a sterile environment helps reduce the risk of infection and ensures a smooth treatment process. It is also important to have a reliable support system in place, such as family members or caregivers who can assist if needed. Regular communication with healthcare providers is essential for monitoring progress and addressing any concerns.
