Peritoneal Dialysis

Overview

Peritoneal dialysis, a crucial treatment for kidney failure, utilizes the abdominal lining (peritoneum) to filter blood from within the body when the kidneys no longer function. This process effectively eliminates the body's toxic waste, excess water, and salt, thereby maintaining the patient's health.

Our VISION

What does peritoneal dialysis involve?

The process of peritoneal dialysis involves the insertion of a flexible plastic tube, known as a catheter, into the belly. This catheter then introduces sterile fluid into the belly, where it remains for a period of time to facilitate the filtering process. Once the filtering is complete, the fluid exits the body through the catheter, carrying the waste and excess substances with it.

There are two forms of peritoneal dialysis such as:

  1. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): CAPD is considered an at-home treatment that entails permanently placing a tube into the abdomen to enable daily emptying and replacement of dialysate fluid.
  2. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD): APD is a form of dialysis for end-stage renal disease. This is performed using a dialysis machine, which helps administer and flush out dialysate, providing a convenient and comfortable dialysis experience and ensuring patients' comfort and peace of mind during the treatment.

When is peritoneal dialysis required?

Dialysis is required when the kidneys are no longer functioning optimally. Kidney damage may worsen over time as a result of the following health conditions:

  1. Diabetes mellitus: Diabetes is one of the major causes of kidney disease, a health condition known as diabetic nephropathy, one of the major complications of diabetes type 1 and 2. This results in the slow decline of kidney function, eventually progressing to end-stage renal failure.
  2. High blood pressure: Elevated blood pressure can damage the kidneys. When this occurs, the kidneys are unable to excrete extra waste and fluid from the body.
  3. A genetic disorder (polycystic kidney disease): Polycystic kidney disease develops when several cysts form on the kidneys. When there are many cysts, or they become too big, this can damage the kidneys.
  4. Glomerulonephritis refers to damage to the tiny filters inside the kidneys (glomeruli), which are the kidneys’ small blood vessels. As a result, the kidneys will have further trouble removing a surplus of waste and fluid from the body and maintaining a healthy fluid balance.
  5. Kidney failure: Renal failure means the kidneys cannot function and lose almost ninety per cent of their function (National Kidney Foundation: 2023). When this occurs, doctors discuss treatment options such as dialysis and a kidney transplant.
