Pre-dialysis
Overview
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist, located just below the rib cage on either side of the spine. They play a crucial role in filtering waste from the blood, producing urine, regulating blood pressure, balancing electrolytes, and producing essential hormones.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term condition that often progresses silently until the later stages. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, and a family history of kidney disease. Early signs may include fatigue, swelling, and changes in urination patterns. Regular checkups and effective management of underlying conditions are vital for early detection and slowing disease progression. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, can significantly reduce the risk of CKD.

Our VISION
Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes and slow disease progression:
Do You Know Your Stage?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is classified into five stages, determined by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) — a blood test that measures how effectively your kidneys filter waste and excess fluid. As CKD progresses, kidney function declines, requiring tailored treatment approaches to slow damage and preserve function. In the final stage, known as kidney failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the kidneys can no longer function adequately, making dialysis or a kidney transplant essential for survival.

What Does It Mean to Have Renal Failure?
Renal failure, or stage five Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), occurs when the kidneys lose nearly all their function. Common signs of progressive kidney disease include:
- Itching
- Fatigue
- Poor appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fluid retention, leading to swelling (Oedema)
- Fluid buildup in the lungs, causing breathing difficulties
When medication alone is insufficient to manage these symptoms, dialysis becomes the primary treatment option. Dialysis helps remove toxins and excess fluid from the blood, alleviating symptoms and enhancing overall health.
Is haemodialysis a solution to a better quality of life?
Most patients feel tired for a few hours after a standard haemodialysis treatment. However, most people who have switched to more frequent or longer haemodialysis report feeling more energetic, experiencing less nausea, and finding they are able to sleep better [1].
Why Pre-Dialysis?
"It’s better to be prepared than to get ready." — Will Smith
Early intervention is crucial for CKD patients. A structured pre-dialysis program can prevent or reduce the severity of complications associated with late-stage kidney disease. The program is tailored to meet the needs of:
- Patients with an eGFR of 60 or below
- Patients who were previously on dialysis but have regained kidney function
- Individuals with high-risk factors for CKD
- Family members of CKD patients
Benefits of Pre-Dialysis
- Avoiding Urgent Dialysis: Reduces the likelihood of emergency dialysis.
- Patient and Family Education: Equips patients and their loved ones with essential knowledge about CKD and treatment options.
- Psychosocial Support: Helps patients mentally and emotionally prepare for potential dialysis or transplantation.
- Multidisciplinary Care: Access to a comprehensive care team for optimal disease management.
- Decision-Making Support: Informed choice regarding renal replacement therapy (RRT).
- Early Dialysis Access: Facilitates timely creation of dialysis access points.
- Training in RRT Modalities: Ensures patients are well-prepared for their selected treatment.
- CKD Complications Management: Addresses anemia and other CKD-related issues.
- Lifestyle Planning: Supports work/life adjustments to maintain quality of life.
